Ballygally Castle Hotel is perfectly situated on the picturesque Antrim coast just 26 miles from Belfast and just 6 miles from Larne. The castle looks out onto the soft, sandy beaches of Ballygally bay, and dates back to the 1625 and is unusual as it is the only 17th century building still used as a dwelling in Northern Ireland today. The hotel is said to be haunted by a friendly ghost and if you are brave enough you can take a visit to the ghost room located in one of the towers and discover for yourself.

The history of the castle is long and interesting, it can be dated back to 1625 when it was built by James Shaw and his wife Isabella Brisbane. James Shaw had come to the area from Scotland seeking his fortune. To date their coat of arms and a shield with a personal inscription and their initials still remains over the entrance door to the Castle. The Castle has served as a place of refuge by the Protestants during the Civil Wars. The Irish tried on numerous occasions to take hold of the castle but to no avail. Ballybally Castle has witnessed many troubles and has alternated between a family home and a fortress. In the early 1800's the Shaw family lost their wealth and lands and the property was sub sequentially sold. It served some time as a  coastguard station. In the early 1950's it was acquired by a textile millionaire Mr Cyril Lord who renovated the castle into a hotel. In 1966 the Castle hotel was purchased by the Hastings Hotel Group who have expended time and money into converting this imposing building into a first class luxurious resort.

Having gone through an extensive renovation and improvement programme in recent years, Ballygally is now considered to be one of the foremost castle hotels in Northern Ireland. The castle has still managed to maintain a number of its original features and is furnished with fine antique furnishings and bespoke furniture, complementing the castles noble exterior. The castle is in close proximity to many first rate golf courses, Cairndhu golf course is only 2 miles from the hotel and has breathtaking coastal views. Located less than one hours drive away is the world acclaimed Royal Portsrush championship golf course. A similar distance away are the similar and  excellent courses of Portstewart, Castlerock and Masserene.

The local vicinity has numerous popular attractions  and recreation activities in close proximity, that are easily accessible. The area is also an excellent base for exploring this superior area of outstanding natural beauty. Just a close drive from this luxurious resort is the glorious Nine Glens of Antrim.
