Experience the Canals of Venice and Some Ancient Landmarks.

When traveling to Northern Italy, many tourists make it a strict point to stop in Venice. Long known as the city of water or the city of light, whatever you call it, it's simply breathtaking. The city spans across over 100 small islands in the Venetian Lagoon and is made up the famous Grand Canal lined with old domed buildings and dotted with narrow gondolas. The area of Veneto and the Venetian Republic acted as a primary maritime power during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Many examples of this architecture reside in Venice. The clock (alternatively known as St Mark's Clocktower or the Moors' Clocktower) displays the time of day, the dominant sign of Zodiac and the current phase of the moon, an extraordinarily elaborate timepiece to photograph or simply marvel. St Mark's Square is the heart of Venice, seat of both political and religious power (right next door is the Procuratie Vecchie, the administrative buildings of the old Republic), the commercial centre and for centuries the place to meet in the city. The clock helped the maritime seamen know what was the best time to leave the Canal for sea.

Venice also has wonderful examples of 17th century bridges. The Bridge of Sighs, houses two overlapping corridors, designed by Antonio Contin. Its main purpose was to connect the Old Prisons, in the Doge's Palace to the New Prisons over the Palazzo River. The Bridge of Sighs was named as such because the prisoners who passed through its two passages viewed the beautiful sight of the lagoon and the island of Giorgio. Upon such a lovely sight, it was the realization of their last glimpse of freedom.
