Atlanta is the capital of Georgia and the most populous city and the 9^th most populated metropolitan area in the United States. Between 2000 and 2006, Atlanta was the fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation, with an unprecedented growth rate of 20.5% overall.

Atlanta has much to offer tourists, including museums ranging from fine arts to beverages. The most prominent sites include Martin Luthur King Jr. National Historic Site, although Atlanta is also home to the Atlanta History Center, Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum as well as the Carter Center and Presidential Library to name a few.

In addition to the historic sites, Atlanta has a great representation of arts offering several theatres and museums including Woodruff Arts Center which combines visual and performing arts divisions and High Museum of Art which is one of the largest in the country. The High Museum offers more than 11,000 works in their permanent collection which includes American Art, African American Art and a variety of works from Claude Monet, Dorothea Lange and Chuck Close to name a few. The High supports works my Southern artists and also includes a department devoted to the field of self-taught art, a distinction in North American museums.

Atlanta is also home to the world’s largest aquarium, The Georgia Aquarium which opened in 2005 and uses more than 8.1 million gallons of water to house more than 100,000 animals of 500 different species including four young whale sharks. The museum was funded by a nearly $250 million donation from Home Depot founder Bernie Marcus and was built on 20 acres in downtown Atlanta. Other notable contributors to this museum were Coca Cola, Turner Broadcasting, Bellsouth to name a few. The museum also offers an onsite restaurant, a parking lot, gift shops and a 4D theatre. The aquarium is the only one in the United States which currently features a Great Hammerhead Shark and is home to several beluga whales.

For those who are interested in entertainment and the performing arts, Atlanta offers not only a symphony orchestra but also an opera and ballet as well as New Trinity Baroque, the Atlanta Boy Choir and many others. The city is well known for their active live music though early closing times have hurt many of the small clubs.

If your interest lies more in sports, Atlanta offers a rich history including the oldest on-campus Division 1 Football stadium, the Bobby Dodd Stadium at Georgia Tech. This stadium was built by students in 1913 and named in honor of Robert Lee “Bobby” Dodd, a longtime athletic director and coach at Georgia Tech.
